We hear from Masie George of The Basement Gym + Studio as they prepare to launch a second site in the neighbourhood. Scroll down for the special Camdenist offer, too…

The Basement was founded in the summer of 2020, in the middle of what felt like a whirlwind. We opened our first club in Kentish Town during a time of uncertainty and change, and we built it from the ground up. Our vision was clear: create a space that cuts through the noise. A space that was beautifully designed but rooted in function. A proper gym.

Since then, we’ve welcomed people from all walks of life – serious lifters, total beginners, postnatal mums, athletes, artists (and everything in between) all training side by side. It’s not about how much you lift or how long you’ve been doing it. It’s about showing up with intention. That’s always been the point.

We designed The Basement to support that mindset. No gimmicks. No egos. Just world-class equipment, a refined training environment, and a team that genuinely cares about helping their community move better and feel stronger.

Over the past five years, we’ve refined our offering with in-house personal training, recovery-focused yoga, a sauna and steam room, and a proper nutrition bar that’s become a post-session ritual for many of our members.

And now, we’re ready to do it again.

This month, we open the doors to our second club: The Basement Camden. Located just off Parkway, this new space brings everything we’ve learned in Kentish Town and adds to it.

Camden will offer the same signature focus on strength and individualised training, but with more space, more recovery features, and a new energy.

Scenes from recent The Basement Camden Town launch party

In 2020, we never set out to “build a community”, but one found us anyway. What’s grown in Kentish Town is something we never expected, but deeply value: a group of people who not only train side by side but support each other through life beyond the gym.

We’ve seen friendships form, BBQs hosted, socials planned, and last week, we had the privilege of previewing Camden with some of our most cherished members of our community – a moment that meant everything to us. In a city where community can feel hard to come by, especially in London, something truly beautiful has taken root in North London. And we can’t wait to carry that spirit over to Camden.

Our member experience strategy has been meticulously shaped by our female-led management team in North London. Working from the female gaze, we’ve created a training environment that is truly inclusive – contributing to our reputation as a safe, welcoming and empowering space for all members. This has fast become one of our most defining characteristics and one of the key things that sets us apart.

So, what can members expect in Camden? A purpose-built gym floor with best-in-class resistance and free weight equipment, a studio for curated yoga sessions, and an expanded recovery zone with a spa-style sauna, steam room and banya ice drop bucket.

Every detail, from the layout to the lighting, has been considered. We’ve taken a classic modernist approach to gym design: clean lines, balanced flow, and a focus on quality that does the talking.

We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’re just trying to do the important things and do them well. That’s The Art of Good Gym Making, and it’s what we’ve built Kentish Town, and now our new club in Camden too.

To every founding member who’s joined us so far – thank you. And to those about to walk through our doors for the first time, we can’t wait to welcome you.

See you on the floor.
Maisie
